If you’ve changed your mailbox password in your hosting control panel (cPanel, Plesk, etc.), you also need to update it on your iPhone so it can continue to send and receive email.
Note: These steps apply to the built-in Mail app on iPhone. Screens may look slightly different depending on your iOS version, but the options are the same.
Step 1: Make sure you know your new password
- Log in to your hosting control panel (for example, cPanel or Plesk).
- Go to Email Accounts (or similar).
- Locate the mailbox (e.g.
you@yourdomain.com) and confirm the new password.
You will need this new password in the following steps.
Step 2: Open the settings for the email account on your iPhone
- On your iPhone, tap Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Mail.
- Tap Accounts.
- Tap the email account you want to update (for example, your domain email address).
Step 3: Update the incoming mail password
The exact labels can vary slightly by iOS version. If you see an Account screen, follow these general steps:
- Tap the account name or your email address (usually shown at the top of the screen).
- Look for a section titled Incoming Mail Server. You should see:
- Host Name (e.g.
mail.yourdomain.comormail.servername.com) - User Name (usually your full email address)
- Password
- Host Name (e.g.
- In the Password field, delete the old password and enter your new email password.
- Tap Done (usually in the top right corner) to save.
Step 4: Update the outgoing mail (SMTP) password
You also need to update the password for the outgoing mail server:
- On the same account screen, find the section labelled Outgoing Mail Server.
- Tap the SMTP server shown there (for example:
mail.yourdomain.com). - Tap the Primary Server (or the server marked as On).
- On the server settings screen, you should see:
- Host Name
- User Name (your email address)
- Password
- Other settings such as Use SSL, Server Port, etc.
- In the Password field, delete the old password and enter the new email password.
- Tap Done (top right) to save.
Tip: On many servers, the username for outgoing (SMTP) is also your full email address. Make sure it matches exactly.
Step 5: Test your email
- Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
- Swipe down in the Inbox to refresh and check for new mail. Make sure there are no error messages.
- Send a test email to yourself:
- Compose a new message from this account.
- Send it to the same email address (your own).
- Verify that it leaves the Outbox and then arrives back in your Inbox.
Troubleshooting
- Still seeing a password error?
Double-check the new password in your hosting control panel and re-enter it carefully on the iPhone. Watch out for autocorrect changing the password as you type. - Wrong username?
The username must usually be your full email address (for exampleyou@yourdomain.com), not just the part before the @. - Account locked?
Too many failed password attempts may temporarily lock the mailbox or your IP address. Wait a few minutes, or contact our support team to check for lockouts or firewall blocks. - Ports / SSL:
If you manually adjusted ports or SSL settings in the past, and things still do not work, contact support and we can confirm the correct:- Incoming mail server name & port (IMAP/POP)
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP) name & port
- SSL / TLS settings
If you’re not comfortable making these changes or something doesn’t match your screen, please contact our support team and we can assist you with screenshots or remote guidance.
